Tom
Metcalf 's first MG ride was in an MGA
at age six. That ride left a lasting impression and sparked
his love for MG sports cars. During his college years at
Ashland University, his first two MGs were purchased – a
well used 1968 Midget, and a 1935 MG PB. Many MGs later,
he embarked on his first restoration… his
own 1948 MG TC during the early 80’s.
In January 1990, at the urging of a local business friend who
wanted his TC to be restored to “look like Toms”, Tom left an 18-year IT career and
started Safety Fast Restoration. Tom single handedly completed the 4-month
restoration in time for his first customer to make a successful journey around
the home country at the New England MGT Register’s Circuit
of Britain.
Since that time, Safety Fast Restoration has grown to 5 employees
and produces award winning, world-class restorations for customers
from all over the United States and Canada. His resume includes a supercharged C-Type that calls
Laguna Seca home, 4 TA/B Tickfords (with three more in process), and dozens of
TCs, J2s, & P-Types. In addition to his own personal collection, many
of his customers’ cars have been invited to the most prestigious Concours
d’Elegance events in the United States with blue ribbons
to show for his labor of love.
His personal MG collection includes: 1932 supercharged F-Type, 1935 MG
PB, 1948 MG TC, a 1974 MGB GT factory V8, and a 1974 Midget (bought new). The
current project is a 1936 MG NB 2 seater, with another NB waiting in the wings
when this one’s done. Then there’s the L1 after that…
Tom is a member of the New England MGT Register, the Octagon
Car Club (UK) and the MG Car Club (UK). He is the Treasurer and Vice Chairman of the North
American MMM Register and has served as MMM Representative on the MG 2006 Planning
Committee. He and his wife, Kathleen, live in Ashland,
Ohio with their four boys ages 16-21.
